By Jessica Williams

Greeks are known to prepare some of the tastiest meals on the planet. It is also from Greece that you will get the widest variety for breakfast, lunch, dinner, drinks, etc. Authentic Greek cuisine looks and tastes different from one season to the other. You are served with fish, all types of meat, bread, grains and a wide range of drinks to wash them down. Deserts include bread, pastry, nuts, honey and herbs, to mention just a few.

The serving of salads and appetizers will instantly ignite your appetite. Among the most common is Mezedes, a choice for those moments when you receive an impromptu guest or are in a hurry. Other salad and appetizer options include kalamata, gavros, fava and deep friend vegetables. What is referred to as Greek Salad is prepared using finely shred tomatoes that are mixed with cheese, cucumber, red onions and topped with olive oil.

It is seasoning that differentiates vegetable soups. Most of the vegetables used are common. For instance, lentil soup requires the addition of vinegar and olive oil. Rice soup is prepared by adding meat balls. There is kakavia soup that is common because it can be made using any local fish species as long as the bones are removed. Flavoring of rice and chicken soup requires the addition of lemon.

Vegetarians have a wide range of healthy and nutritious foods to choose from. The vegetarian diet is also perfect for fasting because it provides all the energy and nutrients the body requires. The plate may include fresh peas baked in an oven, carrot dill, potatoes, onions and aromatic herbs. Though greens are mainly used as appetizers, they also form part of light main course meals alongside boiled potatoes and beans.

It is impossible to talk about Greek meals without including sea foods and meat. Beef, lobsters and lean pork were the most common serving. When meat formed part of soup, it was rolled into meat balls. Meat was also seasoned with pepper, lemon and herbs after grilling to make it tastier. The unique rabbit or hare soup was flavored using cinnamon and served alongside a glass of wine.

Greeks have a variety of meals to prepare when you have limited time and whose ingredients are affordable. The most common is macaroni and spaghetti that are served with vegetables and soup. Omelet is another quick fix meal. There is a native serving referred to as hilopites made of savory chicken sliced in form of tiles and topped with tomato sauce.

After the main meal, Greeks would serve you sweets and desert. A common inclusion is almond which is prepared into balls that are then coated or spiced with rose water and sugar. Other desert components include nuts. Christmas cookies that are coated with sugar powder are also common on the table. Yogurt enriched with walnuts and honey is also used as desert.

After meals, you have an option of alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks. You may also opt for beverages like coffee and tea which may be served with snacks or without. The addition of fresh herbs like mint and chamomile makes your cup tastier. Beers and wines for Greeks are brewed to perfection using authentic ingredients. There is the option of local liquor that is sweetly flavored.
