Efficient Transportation Of Live Lobster

By Jeffrey Murphy

A lobster that is cooked when it is still fresh happens to be a delicacy for most people. Among other ways of preparing it, cooking when alive is one of the best ways. It is not a simple task to transport them as they are used to environments of cold salty water. Creating such an environment in your tool of transportation is quite difficult. Delivering a live lobster to your place therefore takes good planning.

For one to get positive results in the transportation of these creatures, be it from a grocery store or a fish market, proper planning has to be done. You should make sure that at any time they should be moist and cool while shipping them to your house. Lack of oxygen also happens to be one of the reason most of them die on the way. It is therefore important to keep them cool as this helps them use less oxygen amount.

Oxygen consumption is at a high rate with the lobsters in environments of high temperatures. This then puts them at a death risk. Moisture is therefore quite essential for them breathing as we all know they use gills. When handled properly, it becomes easy to keep a hard-shelled lobster breathing for a maximum period of five days, outside water.

For one to keep lobsters moist at all times, he or she does not have to keep them submerged. They actually survive better during transportation when not placed in water. Having them packed directly in dry ice is dangerous and not advisable. This has serious repercussions when the ice melts. They will swell and eventually burst when in fresh. They will also asphyxiate in dry ice as it has great amounts of carbon dioxide.

Shipping in seawater is not ideal, not unless the tank is outfitted with equipment that provide aeration. Lack of aeration leads to a lobster using up the dissolved oxygen in a faster rate, which leads to suffocation. Use of refrigerated trucks are ideal as they maintain the right temperature and moisture.

There is importance in keeping lobsters cool before packing them so as to attain perfect results. Acclimatization is the reason for this, since they get moved from warm temperatures to cold ones. Even though the lobsters are believed to be able to handle warm to cold temperatures changes well, rapid changes in temperature will definitely affect them.

They should also not be fed for a period of two to three days before being relocated. When they are transported after a very recent feeding, there is a high chance for them to vomit as well as use up more oxygen than they would have on empty stomach. They should be packed closely, also not tight to avoid breaking their shells.

Boiling the lobsters when they are alive is important because these creatures do not stay fresh for a long period of time while they are not in water. However, preheating it would help keep it fresh for up to four days with the help of freezing. Care should be taken while preparing lobsters that were previously preserved not to overcook and make them hard.
